To gain more knowledge about music videos and the ideas and concepts that are used in them we analysed 3 videos that had been previously released. This is useful because it allows us to see how professional directors/producers represent different songs in their music videos.
The first music video that I looked at is 'Where Is The Love' by The Black Eyed Peas. This is an interesting video because it is getting across a message. Which makes it quite a powerful video because it interacts with the audience. This is a good way to make the audience interested as they feel like the video is aimed at them because they can relate to the issues shown. There is a strong theme of rebellion in the video and this is shown in the activities that the artists take part in and their appearance and behaviour. The way they look rebellious is that some of the artists are wearing hoodies and they are mainly wearing black. Black is seen as a rebellious colour and hoodies are associated with teenagers and anti social behaviour. In the video the artists are getting their message across by using a form of below the line advertising. For example, putting stickers with a question mark on around for the public to see and singing out of a van. This is effective because people don't have choice whether they see or hear it, it's just there. Which fits in with the rebellious and out there theme. The question mark is significant because the title of the song and what they are singing about is a question.
The second music video that I am analysing is 'Push The Tempo' by Fatboy Slim. It is a narrative and concept video. The story involves a man ordering a tape with a song on that makes everyone react in a crazy way, this is the concept. There is intertextuality in the music video as it plays clips from famous cartoons. It is set in a less developed country which you can tell is not the original background for the 3 main characters in the story. The idea of the main characters is to let people listen to this new music if they pay money which will result in them getting rich. However a man in the video puts the tape into a big stereo system which plays loudly in a local market community. This makes everyone lose control of their bodies and causes chaos. Then the police chase and capture the main character who ordered the tape in the first place. The point of the concept is to show that when you listen to this song you lose control and go crazy which is probably what the artist wants the real listeners to do in a way, not literally damage their belongings though!
The third music video that I am analysing is 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles. This was the first music video ever to be shown on MTV and was also the millionth video to be aired on the channel. It was produced in 1979 and is a concept and performance video. The concept is that video is killing the radio, which means that in the 50's, 60's and 70's the radio was very important and everyone listened to it but now video is going to take the spotlight. The video is about the change in technology and how times are evolving. At the time they thought that radio will not be loved by anyone anymore and they believed that children wouldn't appreciate past technology. However radio's are still used widely today. Many different effects are used such as fades which were probably quite recent technology at that time. The whole video has a futuristic theme and feel to it from the costumes they are wearing to the setting they are in. The video features a lot of performance shots as it shows the artists playing their instruments.
